I want the rafter ends to be a birds mouth cut, but the rafter ends are trimmed to what appears to be the same depth as the sub-fascia.
How do I get the Rafter tails to be full birds mouth cut.

Thanks,

Lane

Chief has a number of videos...but this is a good place to start.  https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/watch/343/framing-a-roof.html?playlist=146

Not really sure what you mean by "birds mouth" cut at the rafter tail?

Something like this pic?

Yes, that is what I want it to do.

Yes and no.
I looked at the training video, and it appears the rafter tail is controlled by the vertical dimension of the fascia.  Not the way it works in real life, but apparently the way you have to do it in Chief.
I did see where you can add rafter tails from the library, and I am working on that to see how I can do a custom rafter tail.

I did a video on rafter tails sometime ago...maybe it’ll get you started.

Plan on left done just now, right side done when rafter tails were first added to Chief.

Except for the profile, settings look to be the same. Tried several profiles today and all show the gap.

Interesting, think I will send the plan in to Chief.

Would need to play a little more but it seems the custom profile orients itself starting from the bottom tip.  Some profiles might work ok that way but the majority of typical profiles seem to work out better with the square cut setting.

May be a documentation deficiency but have not checked that either.

Is this another incomplete feature from Chief?

It only seems to come into play if you have a fascia board and if necessary you could compensate by using the profile extension setting.

Sorry it is the sub fascia that is causing the issue and yes that might be worth submitting to see what sort of comment you might get.

I did send it in, so we will see.

I try to show framing the way we do it here in CA (my area anyway) and we do not use sub facia anywhere.

Just 2x eves and gable end "barge" rafters with shadow boards to cover roof sheathing edge (covered by rain gutter on eves)

I think the problem is in the way you drew the rafter tail molding profile.  See the attached pics.

I modified the front edge of your "rafter tail" design...made it vertical and aligned the top and bottom edges so they finished in the same plane...applied it to your roof...reframed.  All looks good.

But that gives us an angled facia, which would not easily receive rain gutters.

My first try I made the profile at the slope of the roof, and it showed up as half size.  Then

I rotated the drawing to horizontal to get what you see in my plan.

Whatever is going on, your try did overcome the gap situation, which I believe to be

related to sub facia empty space, and my not wanting sub facia, but you may not omit sub facia, just change it to 1/16".

Looking forward to hearing from CA.

Thank You !

J

I just think it's all in the execution...I doubt there is any issue with the software.

I drew a rafter tail is section...made the polyline match the roof pitch.  Drew the tail design.  Then, copied and rotated it so it was "level"...no longer at an 8/12 pitch.  Saved the tail design as a molding into the library.  I then selected this tail in the roof DBX and changed a few setting so that the fascia was plumb and attached a gutter.
