New Computer Problems

I just built a new computer with what I thought was top of the line parts, however my CPU maxes out whenever I raytrace and now it causes my computer to crash. I can't figure out what the heck the problem is. Below is a list of the parts I purchased. Any advise is appreciated.

 Parts List:

*MasterCase Pro 5 Mid-Tower Case with FreeForm Modular System, Window Side Panel, Top Mesh Cover, and Watercooling Bracket by Cooler Master
*WD Black 1TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD1003FZEX
*EVGA 210-GQ-0850-V1 GQ 80 Plus Gold, 850W ECO Mode Semi Modular Power Supply
*G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C17Q-32GTZR
*GIGABYTE X399 AORUS Gaming 7 sTR4 AMD X399 ATX 3*M.2 4-Way SLI AMD Motherboard
*SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V6E1T0BW
*GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 GV-N1080WF3OC-8GD 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support ATX Video Card
*Windows 10 Home - 64-bit - OEM
*Enermax Liqtech TR4 240 AIO Liquid CPU Cooler, Support 500W+TDP and Overclocking, AMD Socket TR4 Ready, ELC-LTTR240-TBP
*AMD RYZEN Threadripper 1950X 16-Core / 32 Threads 3.4 GHz Socket sTR4 180W YD195XA8AEWOF Desktop Processor

Shouldn't my computer be up to par to run chief without breaking a sweat? What could be causing the problem here?

UPDATE: The ram won't clock higher than 2133mhz. They can go up to 3600mhz but when I push them higher than 2133mhz the system becomes unstable.

Hi Rosco!

I have a Threadripper system that is very similar to yours, that I built myself--so maybe I can help. A couple questions: Were you ever able to Raytrace with no problems? Have you run major burn-in tests and benchmarks? Are you running all 18 cores at time of Raytace? Are you opening the file and raytracing on the same drive? Have you tried swapping the motherboard yet? Where did you buy the parts? I actually had problems with the Aorus board and swapped it out for the AsRock, and I haven't had an issue since then. I think I have heard that the Aorus has problems with memory compatibility.  An 850w PSU is right on the borderline of needing to be the next size up, with your hardware. I highly doubt this would be causing your issues.

I am able to get my memory Corsair Dominator to clock to 2933 with the system absolutely loving it. The Threadripper is a Chief Render Ripper, in my opinion, I actually named my computer da Render Ripper ;) Currently I have open a 90k square foot plan file and a Raytrace of about 10k square feet with too many lights to count, and I am writing this posting to you with no problems, sick! Hopefully, you can get yours there, I will do what I can to help.

Peace,

Jon

It did render before I tried to up the clock speed of the ram. Now it renders for a few passes and then Chief crashes. I have the rendering set to only use 26 of the 32 cores. When ever the computer gets to 100% load it keeps crashing. Maybe it is something with the mobo. I will have to look into that.

After re-reading your posting---it is most definitely your RAM. First, check to make sure that it is compatible with your motherboard (I think it is), then try to reseat the RAM and then run a PASSMARK or memory stress test. My winning combo was 64gb of CMD32GX4M4B3200C16 (quad channel), with the AsRock Taichi mobo.

As David James indicates, it's likely an overheating issue. In most cases if it was a ram frequency problem then your system would not even boot up. Also, when Ray Tracing it is normal that all assigned cores will run at 100%, that's how it works.

Before trying any type of overclocking you should first stress test your system at it's default settings to establish a benchmark and to make sure everything is working properly under all conditions, especially on a self-built system.

I too suspect the CPU overheating , did you replace the TIM on the AIO Cooler for something better when you installed it?   eg  MX-4 or NH-T1

Also your Ram is not on Gskill's QVL list with that MB although the 3200mhz version is.... not all DDR4 is the same it seems (timing wise), my Gskill 2800 just would not work reliably with a Gigabyte X99 Board I had , it was swapped out for Corsair Vengeance 3000 Ram by the Store and it has been stable , both on the GB MB and Asus X99A-II I now have, though it won't boot 3000 on 100 Strap ( it will boot 3200 though), XMP automatically  changes the Strap to 125mhz on my system , so make sure that didn't happen to you and you weren't inadvertently Overclocking if the Multiplier wasn't automatically changed too.

So we're thinking it's a RAM compatibility issue. Mick was right. The ram I bought is not on the QVL list. We are going to apply new thermal paste just to be safe. The computer doesn't crash anymore during rendering, Chief is the only thing that crashes now and so far just during rendering. It gets a few passes in and shuts down. I have picked out two different sets of compatible RAM (according the the QVL List). Below are the links. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to thank you guys for taking time out of your day to help me. You guys offer an invaluable service to this forum.

The ram you have gets good reviews I know someone who just ordered some, but it's not for the Ryzen Platform AFAIK but the 3200 mhz version is , so hopefully your retailer will swap it out for you once you explain the issue, this is the 3200mhz

I just noticed on the Newegg Flare Ram page you linked there is a Gskill Chat Button , perhaps ask them a few questions , then see if they will help arrange a swap out perhaps if needed...

If you aren't already , download HWInfo64 ( or similar) and keep an eye on your heat during renders , if the system isn't shutting down because of thermal issues then 4DDesign maybe right that your PS maybe on the edge of enough power at 850W for a system like that or you just got unlucky and it is a bad one , instant off shutdowns are usually one or the other in my experience , ie the PS trips to protect itself ( or it's BAD )  or the CPU shuts the computer down to protect itself....  if you have another PS you can swap it out for , that maybe one way to test it...

I called it first. Heat is not the issue.

My quad kit is approved, there is a master list available on AMD's website.

I bought the G.SKILL Flare X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q-32GFX to replace the RAM that wasn't compatible with my mobo. I should have payed a little closer attention to detail when purchasing my parts. Thank you to all who helped me out on here. Especially you, Jon. My RAM should be here Friday and we're going to install it and test it out.

Go with the Gskill. The timing is perfect for Ryzen, cas14. Look it up. I wish I got that kit, as it wasn't available when I built it. Did you get the Ripper for 7? I am thinking about building a second rig that is so cheap.

I bought the ripper on sale for $799.99. It was a pre- Black Friday sale. I bought everything on my list for sale. Around Black Friday seems to be a good time to buy computer parts. Lol

Just one more thing: the Ripper likes all DIMM's filled up. Look it up. I noticed a significant difference when I filled all to 64total. I know it's expensive. Just a thought. Peace, Jon
