Thanks for the post Ron,  I had not seen anything new in two days so I was thinking I had been banned by CA..... no such luck.......

You were not banned but Joe was willing to pay us not to answer you and to give you neg points.

Not sure how I feel about this. Is there accountability involved? Does the person being rated (either positively or negatively) see who is rating them?

No they do not. The whole thing is Bogus.

Agreed Ron, I soured on the whole concept when

I was slammed with a negative point when I posted

the quote you just referenced. I didn't even take a

position on the issue, just asked how the process

would work. Initially you could see who gave you

points, now they have changed it so you can't. For

my money I think they should just do away with the

whole negative reputation point thing. If we want

to have some fun and throw around positive points

I'm OK with that but I think it should be up to the

forum monitors to deal with the negative stuff.

I don't want to sound disrespectful, but I think you guys are making a much bigger deal out of the whole "reputation point" thing than you should be, and Its actually your joking about it that's likely gonna screw it up.  Leave it alone and I think it will do exactly whats its designed to do...encourage helpful responses and discourage unhelpful ones.  If you look at the list of posters (until the recent Reputation Point Games perhaps) you will quickly see that those with the highest reputation points are among (arguably) the most helpful and knowledgeable posters.  Its just another tool that may or may not be useful to you.  No need to rip it though.

Regarding the idea of getting rid of negative points...Without negative points, the system wouldn't work quite as well and there would be no "check" in place.  By limiting negative votes to one a day, it should work just fine.

If you want to push me over and take my lunch money for being a nerd...go ahead (at least try), but I like the reputation point idea.  Its a better gauge than simply how many posts a person has.  Think of it this way, how do you filter through advice you get on a day to day basis in general...what do you use as a gauge??

-Experience?

-Referrals?

-Reputation?

Being able to see a post count as well as a person's "reputation" sort of helps replace those things in an online forum situation.  Granted its not perfect, but its a good tool in my opinion.

OK, so I have this idea how to make "Reputation Points"

more meaningful. Generally speaking what type of posts

would be the most helpful? Obviously the ones that were

deemed by the OP to have solved the problem (i.e. the

ones selected as the "Best Answer"). I propose that any

post given the Best Answer designation should automatically

generate a Reputation Point for the poster. I think that this

little tweak would steer the whole point system in the

direction of being a barometer of who is supplying useful

information and away from the present "you scratch my

back and I'll scratch yours" type of situation. We have all

seen situations where a simple "ditto" or "I agree" post gets

a Reputation Point and a spot on informative response

that solves a problem gets nothing. What do you think?

The system is far from perfect but I think this little change

would steer it in the right direction.

Maybe add to that a Rep Point for every 5-10 downloads of an attachment. IAE, I agree that it really should be for a useful thread, suggestion or answer.

In the long run, maybe we just need to be judicious and award a point when it's warranted and not award one when it's not.  I rarely award a negative point - but there are a few posts that deserve to get them.

positive reputation points could be a good thing

IF handed out reasonably as suggested

negative reputation points can only lead to trouble

most likely causing flame wars and retaliations etc

CA should disable negative reputation points

My opinion is that the reputation points thing should be turned of.

They are meaningless and of no value.

This forum is to foster communication and help other users.

I can see no purpose for "reputation" points.

It especially erks me when I see users offering help and at the same time touting for reputation points for offering that help.

We seemed to get by OK on the old forum without reputation points.
