Jess,  I have found when importing PDF files of poor quality like old surveys, that converting to PNG gives much better results when imported into Chief if there is no other option such as Graeme has suggested.

yeah I hadn't kept the original original file so just thought I'd try the PDF. I"ll remember to check the  DPI in the future. Thanks Graeme

What's a PNG ? I will try that next time . Thanks Chopsaw

Jess:

some image formats are lossy and some are lossless

.TIF, .BMP, .PNG are lossless

.JPG, GIF are lossy

many many others but these are the common ones

lossy means to save space they drop pixels here and there

if you have an area of one color - it will drop some of the pixels

for the most part you don't notice till you try to zoom in etc

lossless means all pixels are kept

.TIF is a very good format to scan at or take digital pics at

but also gives very large files

.RAW keeps everything - everything - but is usually only used by professional photographers

and photo editors

If I remember right .PNG offers layers of info ???

google each of these to get better info than my memory allows :)
