  1. A little late to the party on this one, but....

I am looking to create a few basic palettes for a few standard kitchen designs that have been repetitively appearing on jobs lately. It's nice to click once and show the client the different options. But as I'm playing with it I noticed none of the cabinet hardware is changing. It always remains what was originally on the cabinet. The hardware location does move around according to the placement settings, but door and draw hardware remains unchanged.

I checked the training video and the options for set properties are supposed to be there, but they don't show up in my Chief drawing.

See attached. Chief training video that has the settings, and my chief with settings missing (ignore the metric, just grabbed a quick template to play with).

    Any thoughts?

I use a 27" Wacom Cintiq for both drawing, sketching, modeling, and a second monitor.

Nice setup. I don't do much sketching and modeling anymore. My office has become more utilitarian, and the need for easy redlining of drawings is a bigger need. I'm traveling more between NY and Florida, and need a good option for redlining pdf checkprints produced by my staff. I want to be able to do redlining anywhere......at the airport, on a plane, at a coffee table, in bed......anywhere I can squeeze in some productivity time.

It looks like it'll be either an Ipad Pro, or my existing Samsung Chromebook plus with Kami pdf and the included stylus. Dam Ipads are freaking expensive, plus apple pen, plus floating keyboard. Jeez I hate Apple.

I have an iPad Pro with both Morpholio Trace and Procreate. An iPad with an Apple Pencil and these apps is AWESOME, and worth the money for these apps alone, not to mention having the LiDAR on the iPad Pro. I have no problem going back and forth between the iPad and Windows. iPad Pro (recommend the 12.9 inch model), except keeping the desktop mostly for Chief.

Thanks for the feedback Rich. I was afraid of this obvious answer. I'll have to look into it more. I like the Lidar paired with a 3d scanner app. I could definitely use it in my toolbox.

  4. I used a digitizer tablet 25 years ago for Autocad 14. My nephew works for Falcon's Creative Group in Orlando doing theme park design and they seem to be using a mix of Wacom tablets AND Wacom Cintiq onscreen drawing computer/monitors.

Has anyone been able to implement a tablet, Wacom or any other brand, with a stylus pen rather than a puck/mouse? The reason I'm thinking of this is, I'd like to also use the stylus for redlining pdf drawings and a stylus is more intuitive than a mouse. I've also looked at an IPAD using Morpholio Trace or Procreate, but I'm not an Apple fan and I'm not really interested in adding any Apple products to my office workflow.

It would be a dream, if Autodesk Sketchbook which I use on my Chromebook Plus with it's stylus pen all the time, was able to import PDF, but it's not.

    So any comment?

  5. I ran into something similar a few months ago. A client wanted a mechanical room in the attic above his garage. The problem, this attic was adjacent to the master bedroom and the mechanical room would only be accessible from the bedroom. I looked through all the codes and remember finding something that stated it couln't be done, but I'll be damed if I can find it now.

I did find an article about why a water cannot be in a closet adjacent to a bedroom.....

Ideally, water heaters should be located near gas or electric service and where water supply and distribution lines can be easily installed. Ventilation is easier to achieve if the unit is located on an exterior wall. Water heaters can be installed in bedroom or bathroom closets, if necessary or preferred, but only if they're an electric, direct vent or sealed combustion chamber unit. Other water heaters that use fuel combustion are not permitted to be installed in bedrooms, bathrooms or closets that open into these rooms.

    Edit:

I think I found it. Section 303.3 of the Fuel Gas Code. Appliances (furnace or water heater) shall not be located in a closet that is only accessible through a bedroom. Then look at exceptions in #5.

much better than my 32" LG.

Yup. Every 32" maxes out at 1080p. Enlarging your screen onto one of those makes the text very pixelated. I found out the hard way.....buy.....test..... return..... waste some more valuable unpaid time

  7. Just my 2 cents.....

I bought two of these Hisense R7 43" last year and love them. Unfortunately they aren't available anymore:

Today I bought 3 Bestbuy branded Insignia FireTV 43" tvs. Two for my assistants upgraded workstation and one for me at home, but I don't care for the screen colors, and I think if you sit too close the corners of the screen aren't as bright as my Hisense tvs. Good enough for my assistant, but I'm returning mine.

I'm going to pick this up tomorrow instead. Vizio 40". It's a bit smaller and should fit on my small desk at home that I have in a spare closet in the basement for late night work away from the wife and kids.

  8. For anyone tight on desktop space, here's a smaller 32" TV that will help. It's the first time I've seen a TV under 40" that is still 4K

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-32-class-q50r-series-led-4k-uhd-smart-tizen-tv/6364277.p?skuId=6364277

But I'm picking up this 43" to squeeze onto my home desk tonight. I just can't deal with this crap any longer.

  9. This solution doesn't work for individual details. I have to open 25 details and move each detail left to right just to get the text to reset........every godam time I take a drawing file from the office 43" monitor to my home 27".

Such a stupid work around. Can't they fix this? I doubt Revit or Archicad has this problem.

  10. I'd say get the Ryzen 3900x with the free included Wraith Prism cooler as an absolute miniumum. They are getting cheaper as the newer Ryzen's have bee released. And I agree, an RTX 2070 Super is a bare minimum. But try the 2080 super.

I'm giving my assistant the computer in my signature, when I'm able to get all my parts. But here's my next build after the RTX and Ryzen becomes easier to acquire, hopefully by February. High end RTX and RYzen 9 parts are only going to OEM in large quantities. I see them pop up on Amazon for 10 seconds, but they sell out by the time I click Shopping Cart.

    Ryzen 9 5950x

Corsair iCUE H150i RGB PRO XT 75 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

MSI MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard

    32 meg ram, G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

RTX 3080, I prefer MSI but anything I can get my hands on

boot and program drive will be Sabrent Rocket 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

data drive will be Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Cooler Master MasterCase H500 ATX Mid Tower Case

Corsair RM 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

This system should last me 2 more years before I hand it off and upgrade again.

    Added edit:

I should also say, I have two systems I built 5 years ago that still run very well. One is my assistants and one I use at home late at night. But it'll probably bog down too much with X13. A new RTX 3070 might help me squeeze another 2 years out of it. Here's the specs:

    Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

    Corsair Vengeance LP 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) DDR3-1866 CL9 Memory

Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3 GB Superclocked ACX Video Card

Cooler Master Storm Trooper ATX Full Tower Case

Corsair HX 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

  11. Is it possible to import a Sketchup model that uses a collada file as an overlay texture to increase detail? I did a quick forum search but most topics deal with exporting a collada file. I want to add more realism by using some of the better models in the Warehouse, and many models use collada files as a quick workaround to add minor details. This clock radio is a perfect example.

Any pros/cons to this approach? Maybe Renerabbitt can chime in with a less techy explanation?

I was concerned about this also. But the 4K monitors are excellent. I also have a LG 32" true monitor. The TCL 4K is far superior to it in clarity and I am running both at 3840x2160.

I originally wanted something between my 27" and the 43" I bought. I was hoping for a cheap 32" or 37", but they don't make 4k TV's in anything less than a 39". You'd have to buy a dedicated gaming monitor for that, and they aren't cheap. So I went with the 43" 4K tv and I'm glad I did.

If you try to use a 32" 1080p HD TV as a monitor you will be very upset with the pixelation.

Might as well add one more trick. In the PBR Rendering Technique Options DBX under Global Illumination uncheck Improve Lighting Quality.

I was watching a PBR Youtube video and I could have sworn they said check the Improve Lighting Quality box, I think by Rennerrabit. Why do you say "uncheck"?

  14. I have dual 43" Hisense Roku monitors and love it. But then when I transfer stuff to my home 27" or my employees 26" the text wrap problems crop up. That's the only negative.

4k monitors have become dirt cheap now. Even 43" Samsung models are only $269 at Bestbuy this week.

Here's an example using a floor material region to eliminate the floor from appearing different between two differently lit rooms. The lighter floor section is my floor material region. The darker floor in the room is the rooms normal floor. With a floor material region the floors lightness transitions as would be expected, no sharp transition across door opening.

That's really annoying. You shouldn't have to do these little tips, tricks, and hacks.

  16. Don't surfaces get affected differently when they are in a different room than the one being rendered? I always see a different floor appearance in an adjacent room though a 6 foot arched opening. In the OP image it looks like the railing/stairwell is creating a separate room where the rendering settings and lights are not reaching??????? I assume.

i will be uploading some new PBR tutorials in the next few days

    Rene,

Did you ever upload the new PBR tutorials? I just checked your Youtube channel and saw the new Twinmotion videos. Have you abandoned PBR for TM instead? I was hoping to sharpen my PBR skills during this downtime.

  18. I just noticed that the automatic header opening framing sizing feature is not working correctly, and does not match the opening specs you set in Default Settings-Framing-Openings.

To confirm, I drew a large house with only one interior wall, added door openings of different sizes and types from 3 feet to 12 feet. They all get assigned headers of (2) 2" x 6". HOWEVER, a door opening that is the same size, and changed to a horizontal slider, doors 3 and 4, get headers applied differently as seen in the schedule.

It also appears to affect the window framing/schedule. All windows of different widths get assigned (2) 2x6. I hate to think about all the projects I sent out in the last 2 months that I didn't review the the door/window shedules. Oh crap.

Before I submit the bug can someone else verify and duplicate?
