  1. Spoke with Michael at CA support. He is recommending something with a video card 2016 or newer. AMD's seem to be universally good, NVidia's had a problem with Sept-Dec 2017 drivers. The May 17 drivers work ok, along with Jan 2018 or newer. YMMV. Short answer is my current PC ain't gonna cut it. Pretty nice guy and kudos for working on New Years eve. I did strongly recommend though that Chief needs to add a blurb on their System Requirements page to let folks know they need to have something 2016 or newer to run X10. Mine met the minimum requirements on that page but no joy. Soooo....found a pretty decent (Amazon reseller) refurbished HP Envy 17M Laptop - 17.3" TouchScreen (1920x1080), 8th Gen Quad-Core i7, 16GB GDDR5, 1TB HDD, NVIDIA MX150 video card (4GB), The video card is supposed to be equivalent to the GT1030. The reviews are almost universally very good on this PC. I should have it here Thursday. It's Windows 10, but I will keep old pc for Win7 applications. Thanks for all the help/recommendations. Happy 2019!
  2. If so, generally what/how do you charge? I see this as an extra service (therefore additional charge) and potentially giving away work product in a useable format, rather than PDF's or prints. The client in this case is the homeowner, not a contractor, so less of a possibility there, but still... This particular client is an engineer so has ACAD and is wanting to do markups / reworks in that. Hoo boy. Thoughts?
  3. I'd be looking for a laptop, I'll keep the Nvidia info in mind. Thanks.
  4. It appears to have something to do with the video card. Tried updating to the latest driver but still the same problem. Last updates for my card were in 2012 though. Tried the fixes suggested in Dermot's note (thanks BTW for replying that late last night), again with no success. I checked video card information from within X10, and it meets the minimum requirements. I tried calling chief technical support, but remained on hold for quite a while. They're probably closed this week, so I'll try again next week I guess. Dermot - if you see this, is there a list of video cards X10 either does or doesn't play nice with? May have to pick up a newer PC, but will likely be a refurbished one that will still be Windows 7 due to some legacy programs I need to use in other applications. Thanks.
  5. New installation of X10 and I am getting the following message on a camera or elevation view or making some default setting changes on walls and windows: Assertion failed: A serious error occurred. Do not save the file in its current state. If you want to try saving your work, use Save As to create a new file. Please restart the program and contact Technical Support. C:\p4sync\dev\Releases\20\chief\source\ChiefQtApplication.cpp(238): Error #272000999 "A serious error occurred. Do not save the file in its current state. If you want to try saving your work, use Save As to create a new file. Please restart the program and contact Technical Support." 12/27/2018 8:10:43 PM Build: 20.3.0.54x64 Not importing a plan or anything, just starting from scratch on a new install. Tried doing a save as and restart as the message says, but same problem. I then tried doing a repair install to no avail. same message. Completely uninstalled and reinstalled (after shut down and re-start) and still same error message. Dang... Anybody else experience something like this? Guess I'll chat with CA support tomorrow if possible.
  6. Yeah, that'll do it. . SMH thanks
  7. Whenever I place an interior door, say a bedroom door in a corner, most of the time Chief will place the swing incorrectly, ie: hinged edge not on the side wall, but out into the room. I have to reverse the swing most every time. I would think this would be programmed by default, rather than editing all the time. Doesn't seem to matter the direction, it happens almost every time. So much so, I'm amazed the few times it randomly places correctly! Is there a fix for this? Probably something simple I just missed - I should have asked this long ago... Thanks
  8. Searched defaults, the forum and checked help but I can't seem to find a setting or any info on assigning a default crown molding profile as you can with a room baseboard molding. Did I miss something obvious or is there no such setting?
  9. Either way, I was pleasantly surprised it worked out as quickly as it did. Kudos to the Chief elves.... and thanks to all who replied here. Merry Christmas to all.
  10. They sent the download link and I have it underway now. Here goes...
  11. Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure how automated it was either. I know the debit payment was pretty dang automated! It showed up almost immediately :-) Tried the show all versions, but it's only showing 7 & 8. Rechecked my email while writing this and got another email saying it would be available in the DL shortly, Not sure if an automated email (it said do not reply to this email) but I'll keep checking. I imagine the upgrades will be pretty active with the current discount and what it will cost after the 1st. That's why I'm making the jump. For those with X10, has it been a good upgrade? I know there were kinks early on as always, but I take it it's pretty stable now? Merry Christmas!
  12. Purchased the X10 update (currently using X8) earlier today and I was wondering how long it takes for the download to become available in my digital locker. I got the invoice and it gave a link to the locker but all that's showing are my X7 and X8 versions, even after a refresh. Searched some on the forum and knowledge base, but didn't really find any info. Maybe it'll be there in another hour or two....
  13. Working on an exterior renovation for a small shop downtown. I need to figure out how to put their logo and some text on both the glass and the awning shown on the attached PDF. I have a JPG of the logos. I also need to put some text on the awning. I used a roof plane to make it, since it needed to bevel around the corner and I didn't know how to do that with a polyline solid. They also want to put some marquee lights (the small clear bulb type) along the front of the awning. Not sure how to do that but am going to try and put a narrow wall along the front limit of the awning and place the lights, then make the wall invisible. Any thoughts or ideas are very much appreciated. Thanks COMMERCIAL EXT RENOVATION.pdf
  14. When I send an orthographic full overview to layout, such as the front of the building, then go back and rotate it around to the back and send that view to the layout, it seems to work fine. It appears correctly on the layout page Save the layout and print to PDF and the PDF file will show either 2 fronts or 2 backs on that page, but not the front and back, as intended. This has happened in both of the new drawings I have created since recently upgrading to X8. Don't recall this happening in X7. Has anybody else run into this and how did you work around it? Is this a known bug in X8? I have build 18.2.1.2x64. Thanks.
  15. Thanks for all the responses. It appears that I would have to select a font that is compressed already and make it the default to apply it globally. Selecting and adjusting each dimension would be a huge time suck. It's a house with 3 floors and a boatload of corners. Oh well,. Glad I asked though, it'll save a lot of time trying to figure it out on my own.
  16. Is there any way to set a width factor for text? I am working on a fairly complex plan and it would be helpful to narrow the dimension and note text in the floorplan area. Thanks
  17. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! That was the problem. I agree with you, that doesn't need to be a "layer". Honestly, I never even knew that one was there. As I sometimes do in othercad, I turned all the layers on to find which layer I needed. Not knowing that layer was there, I did it to myself. Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated. As usual, this board rocks!
  18. No pony walls, just regular walls using Chief's default 4" brick wall.
  19. I'm working on a brick rancher and all of a sudden today, the brick hatch pattern on the plan disappeared. It shows up in elevations, but not on the plan. The door and window openings still show correctly, but no brick line. I tried turning on all the layers, but still nothing. Drew a new brick wall and no brick pattern showing there either. What the heck?!?! Any ideas? I opened an earlier version of the drawing and the pattern appears just fine. I'm sure it was operator error, but I don't for the life of me know what I did. First time I've ever run into this.
  20. Thanks ebdesign, really appreciate the help sorting things out. Your advice and time is greatly appreciated. Happy Easter!
  21. Kbird - Thanks for the check. I had all the main floors set at 0 and did not change ANY of them, (at least not consciously anyway - frustrating). I'll have to check the misaligned walls, as I generated the foundation from the floor above, as I did with the 2nd floor. I used snaps on the second floor interior walls with the lower level shown, to keep just this very thing from being a problem. Go figure.... mthd97 - agree on the whole workaround thing and wishing for more of a straight forward process. In my limited exposure to X7 so far, some things have definitely improved since v10, others kinda stay the same. I just have to get better at it and "enhance my calm". Be well :-)
  22. Another shot at the plan file. Didn't redo the basement as floor 1 yet, it's still on the foundation level. Never ran into this problem that I recall in v9.5 or 10. TennVol Chief 4-1-15 plan upload.plan
  23. Here's an attempt at a couple of pics As you can see, the garage and front porch floors are missing and the basement interior walls are protruding thru the 1st floor. Whether foundation has inteior walls or not, the 1st floor garage and porch floors are still gone. Before adding the interior walls, (should be a simple, straight forward thing, right?), the whole basement footer is at the same elevation, even with the garage door. But add the walls inside and the footer drops. I didn't tell it to do that.
  24. I'll try moving the floors so basement is floor 1. Don't recall needing to do that before though. I'll work on posting a pic when I get to my PC. Thanks. Gawdzira, did you get the file I uploaded earlier?
