  1. I have a possible pole barn client. I have reviewed the CA knowledge base article regarding pole barns. I am using X14 which I believe has some added features for pole barns. I was curious if anyone had a pole barn template with poles and foundations etc that they would consider sharing or selling.

    Brother Printer https://www.brother.ca/en/p/MFCJ6945DW

This does it all.  Two trays (I load them 8 1/2 x 11 and 11 x 17.  Prints both sizes flawlessly, scans up to 11 x 17 in colour and isn't all that bad on ink.  Had mine for a year now with no problems at all.

I also have this printer and use it for all my printing needs…WI-FI enabled works like a charm and print quality is excellent…as Doug said…not too hard on ink…two years on mine

  3. As i learn more about features in this complex program, I discovered the "roof area poly line" choice in the roof plane dbx. Am i missing a selection for similarly displaying room area using a similar tool in the Room DBX box... or even another method? I currently just build a CAD polyline and use its DBX polyline choice but it seems like it could be more automatic...just wondering...

Windows Key, type graphic settings, set Chief to high performance.

Then NVIDIA control panel, global settings, restore

Then NV CP- program settings,  set Chief to always use the Nvidia card.

Then go to your power profiles and make adjustments or make a high performance power plan (search the web on how). Be sure that machine is set to use high perf power plan on both plugged in and battery. IF you need better battery life and use a different power plan stay away form PBR renderings.

While your at it go to your template plan(s) default settings, 3D View Defaults, Rendering Techniques, Physically Based, UNCHECK Use Ray Tracing, (so that DBXs don't use Ray Trace)

and set Daytime backrdrop Intensity to something like 500 (may need to turn that down sometimes, rarely do I turn it up) IF you need RTRT then select it for the individual camera using rendering techniques.

FWIW my laptop has a bit more kick with a 2070s compared to your MaxQ and can struggle if I'm pushing things but is quite serviceable. Doing the above should end crashes unless there is something amiss with the plan (be very careful importing symbols for instance) and careful about how many lights are in use for a view (use light sets)

This advice needs its own thread titled to easily identify the scope of the thread. I have struggled a bit with slowdowns with my projects as they progressed...the tell tale slow downs were always revealed by lengthening periods "grains of sand" time as the RTRT redrew with every mouse move...I changed my settings per Marks easy to follow instructions and the identical plan went from 5 or more seconds to redraw RTRT (end of"grains of sand") to no lag.

    Thanks MarkMC

There are many different laptop combos that work well with Chief…Several here use similar iterations of the Alienware M17 laptop shown in my signature with satisfactory results…I am very pleased with mine…the latest model has several nice improvements…any similarly equipped laptop from a reputable vendor should work for you

In reviewing the specs of your current laptop, it sure looks like it should work well on Chief…don’t know about the others

  6. I guess that is a possibility...Hydronic systems placed around my area would have the tubing held in place by the special clips installed by the special gun shot into the foam board, wire mesh on chairs...etc...but interesting clip...shows how tradesman do things differently across the vast country

  7. Interesting clip above...but as a concrete placer for over 50 years, I would be unhappy about the total waste of money putting the wire mesh down...other than the slab thickenings, none of the wire mesh was on chairs or sitting above the sub-grade...and no one was pulling the wire up by hand...I could just hear my dad yelling "pull the wire up...pull the wire up...it ain't worth nothing sitting on the bottom"...

I have worked in many jurisdictions where 3/16" scale is forbidden. 1/4" or 1/8" for floor plans. That's it.

Best to check with the AHJ first.

Why are plan reviewers scaling plans anyway…the scale has nothing to do with code compliance or zoning…if they need a dimension, I should have provided it…But, if confronted with that sort of silliness, I would give them what they want…1/8” scale…

Add a 3/16 scale along the border so the user doesn't need a rule to measure.

That is a great idea...How is this accomplished...but I would still post the "do not scale" note

Thank you…I am currently using a Logi G 604 with 15 programmable buttonsfor my primary input device. My work environment would accommodate a left hand 3D setup quite nicely. I think the joystick and added programmable buttons would be well used. I started a spreadsheet with hot keys listed but would like to know what buttons do which actions out of the box.

Some of your hot keys ideas are likely way smarter than mine. An example of one setup I would like is to use a hot key to switch from plan view to 3d perspectives or cross sections etc…not savvy enough to figure that out without some help…

  11. I am navigating the 3D mouse world and looking at this product. There is not a lot of info out there about how well it works with Premier...I was looking for info on what settings are standard for the Enterprise...or any of the other iterations...I know the keys are all programmable but it would be nice to know the starting lineup...

That should never be a consideration. Trusting someone with a measuring tape on a job site is asking to get sued. My plans contain a note that states printed dimensions override anyone's tape measure.

3/16" is an acceptable scale for residential plans.

This…I am a relative newcomer, 2 years with a Chief product, I have been drawing buildings of all sorts for a long time…I have placed prominently displayed “ do not scale plan” notes from the beginning…as a Project Manager who rose through the trades, I learned early as a mason to not try to scale the plan.

As others have mentioned, I use  3/16” scale often to fit in 11 x 17 paper …larger designs get 1/8” scale…but the “ do not scale” note always appears on the page

  13. I have no idea what caused the elevation data and marker type in the Room type dbx to change. The marker changed to a solid marker and the elevation numbers disappeared. The example shown should show -8" for the floor , -8 gor stem wall and 109.125 for the ceiling but these elevations disappeared. I have searched for an answer including Help. Anyone have an answer to what changed.

  14. Logitech G 604 wireless 12 button mouse. It replaced a typical 2 button wheel mouse. I would not go back after getting the 604 setup for my preference…I did have issues with the first 604 after a few months but Logitech replaced it with no hassle.

I tried a couple of other 12 or more button mouses but did not like the ethos as well as the 604…

  15. Logitech G604…lots of buttons but very comfortable for me…I tried a few other multi button mouses but did not like the fit or the reach for some buttons…I used it quite a bit over the last year…recently it developed an intermittent connectivity issue…I fought it for a few weeks but called Logitech support today…after a short diagnosis they are shipping a new mouse today…I would call that good service…

  16. I first noticed this anomaly very early in  my journey with Home Designer Pro…i was modeling a Cape Cod with a breezeway between the house and garage…the design was for me…it drove my inexperienced mind crazy… I eventually stumbled on a solution similar to your demonstration with the roof plane…it still does it in X13 but I am so used to it I just fix it and move on…it would be nice to know why and even nicer for Chief to fix it…

  17. I use a Logitech G 604…I really like the mouse but I have also had some issues since upgrading…buttons that worked before changed…I have found that upgrading the GHub software usually fixes it…

  18. I have Pro 2021 and Chief X12 and X13…HDPro, beginning with 2021 will print C and D size sheets directly…no more limits…being a recent user of both packages and having completed permit ready ( and subsequently permits issued) construction sets with both packages, my opinion is Chief Premiere is the way to go.

As I used HD Pro I frequented both products forums for info. Watching tutor videos posted by some very smart guys on both forums demonstrated some of the differences between the two products…and layout tools for Premiere were often featured…I can easily say for me, the layout capabilities of Premiere ,alone, made the upgrade worth the money…

Subsequent use and discovery of Premiere tools and methods that make life easier only confirmed the decision. Now if I can just get away from some bad habits developed while using HD PRO and get a better grasp of layers and saved plan views…

  19. I have 3 projects with the Liftmaster side mount openers...one project is a pole structure with 12' x 12' OH doors. This application required a tensioner kit (spring loaded pushrod) to take up slack at the beginning of the close operation. This is caused by the inertia generated as the larger doors begin to move horizontally and then down...it works perfectly...no issues since installing... the door supplier/installer knew immediately the problem and the solution...

Other applications are standard 8' x 16' doors with minimal headroom...these openers also work as intended...
