Yes, I used an invisible wall (1/2" thick, drywall material)

Umm, no, invisible walls wouldn't be the only way, but it might be the best option. There could be more to the story that I can't tell from the picture, you know? From what I can tell, I'd stick with using the same wall type for the concrete foundation and make it invisible. That should also give you decent wall connection control.

    Thanks again, Rob.

  2. I’ve got a situation where an irregularly-shaped chimney pad will be forming a section of a room’s wall – first attachment.  Obviously, this custom pad cannot act as a true wall which I need to be able to create the room definition.  What are you doing in instances like these?  Using invisible walls to fill in those areas to define the room?

This house also has several walls that come to sharp points – second image.  Is there a way to deform walls in Chief to take on this shape?  If not, I can use poly-solids to get it to look right in 3D but what do I do in plan view to represent this shape?

    Thanks, Kevin

  3. This is how I want it to appear but without the wall coverings, wallboard, and floor surfaces.  I believe the floor surface is already gone but appears to be there as the wall covering starts 3/4" above the subfloor.  There isn't a way to omit the wall covering altogether via a layer?

A framing View should work , but it will depend on what you else you need to show....

A wall type with no drywall or covering should show the framing as well ( turn on Framing, Wall in view).

Hey Mick.  As described above, I don't want to show the studs.

Try the default 3D Framing Layer Set.

Thank you, Eric.  I don't want to see the studs in this elevation.  In fact, I have not even generated any framing at this stage as the house is existing.  I just want to get rid of the wall coverings, wallboard, floor and ceiling surfaces - automatically if possible.

Whether layers are visible or invisible is controlled in "Display Layers/Objects", while in an active camera view you open its Layer Display Options Dialog and uncheck all name layers that you do not with to see and check on all layers you do wish to see. I also use a "Framing Plan view" to streamline that effort. It is always to  be found in Dialog boxes.

With the wall covering create an elevation camera and face the wall covering, open the wall and remove the covering in that wall's wall covering tab. If it is still there after that open that wall's dialog box- Materials tab  and change the  apparent "wall covering" by altering the material surface setting of therouge wall surface. If all else fails, delete the wall and draw another one to replace the offending one.

David - thanks for the reply.  I am quite familiar with turning on/off layers.  There doesn't seem to be a layer for wall coverings or drywall - I've tried main layers only.  I was hoping to find a way to automate this without modifying my existing walls.  The wall covering and wallboard should have a layer of its own.

  7. I’m creating a framing elevation for a shower niche and medicine cabinet rough-in.  I want to show the framing members only without wall, floor, and ceiling surfaces.  I am unfortunately unable to hide these layers.  I also have a wall covering below a chair rail molding that won’t go away.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

That is correct. A simple way for you to examine this is to send a plan view to layout. Perhaps crop the view to show just a small portion. Copy the view just beside and set a different scale factor. Zoom in and visually review the line weights. Toggle line weight scaling to see the effect.

Thanks again, Rob.  I very much appreciate it!

send it to a different layout at 1/2"=1'0" at entirely the same sheet size and print at 1/2 scale.

Thanks Renee.  Are you proposing that I use different layouts and then combine them in a PDF when ready for print?

Kevin, it's also very important that the line weight scale is the same in layout as it is in plan view, section / elevation view, and cad details.

I believe they are the same by default 1/100 mm and I've never changed this.  I'm not sure I get it yet, but you're telling me that if I tick "Use Layout Line Scaling" and the layout box matches the plan view scale, all line weights will be consistent even though the scale from page to page in the layout may vary?

  11. Thanks Rob.  That's what I was getting at.  I was unsure if the line weights would read differently when sent to layout.  So, you're telling me it makes no difference how I have the drawing sheet setup?  If so, what is the point of it?

  12. Is it possible to make the drawing sheet setup linked to the plan view?  I've got a plan view of the entire 1st floor being printed on ARCH D paper at a 3/8" scale.  I also need a close-up plan view of the kitchen which will be at 1/2" scale and will require the ANSI B paper size.  How is this done?  Thanks, Kevin

Never tried that , have you tried just copying the Desktop's Database Libraries Folder over to the Laptop overwriting the existing files if needed, normally I use Syncback on a daily Schedule over the network do that.

Thanks Mick.  Sorry for the delay.  I'm not getting notifications again.  I'll give that a try!  Kevin

  14. I do most of my work on a desktop at home but when I travel, I must export my custom libraries to my laptop so that I have the most recent version of my User Catalog.  I have 21 folders under the User Catalog, and I export them individually as the total library is over 9GB.  They exported fine as they always do but this time around the import onto the laptop is taking FOREVER.  I usually drag and drop three at a time so as not to overwhelm Chief.  The first file named “Untitled 1.calibz” is taking well over 30 minutes to import into my User Catalog and the files size is only 86MB.  It did not take nearly as long two weeks ago when I went through the same process.  Has something changed in the software?  I don’t recall any updates in the last three or four weeks.  At this pace it will take several hours to get all 21 library files into Chief on my laptop.  Just two weeks ago I was able to accomplish this in under an hour.  I have also noticed that the “Import Library Data” dialog box is showing file names that aren’t even included in the solo “Untitled 1.calibz.  It’s like Chief is reading all 21 files before importing the one I am currently adding to the User Library.  Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?  I realize my User Catalog is huge, but Chief has been able to handle it with no problems for years now.  Have I reached some type of ceiling?  Thanks, Kevin
