  1. I was recently drawing a house with a front porch that used columns and in the process I learned a bit about railing walls and how quirky things can be...so, thought I'd put a video together to show one method of creating a porch that works and looks good. Let me know what you think...comments more than welcome. I'm not sure the method I'm showing is the best way to go.
  2. Maybe someone at Chief could chime in and let all us MAC users know if there are any issues?
  3. Can anyone tell me if Chief is playing well with Apple Mojave...the latest and greatest MAC software upgrade? I haven't installed it yet...and I don't need computer issues...so, just wondering what others are doing and/or experiencing. Thanks!
  4. Maybe one of us has moved things around...mine is right above the "resize" button.
  5. That is the "resize" button (not fillet)...just select the "default" button directly above it. You probably hit it by accident, or possibly a hotkey...it happens.
  6. Scott...my wife and I did the New England leaf tour last fall. Had a blast. If you get anywhere near Manchester, New Hampshire...you might want to visit the "Zimmerman House" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The tour is fascinating...and the craftsmanship is beyond belief. It's a "usonian" style, slab on grade...but designed with a pitched roof to handle New England snowfall. Here's a couple pics I took...they won't let you take interior pictures. Front of home... Corner mitred glass window...
  7. Robert and Larry have answered your question...but I made a video. My video show what Robert explained above. Hope the video helps...
  8. Grand Kids are a joy...I love hanging with mine. They are so curious and happy...well, most of the time. Let's face it...these kids are "techies" by the time they are 5. Just think what they will be able to do when they are 10? Or...20? Scary.... I'm happy you are able to have your grand daughter hang out with you!
  9. I've had a few questions about some of my screen porch videos because I skipped over some of the basics. Here's a video that shows how to create a screen porch room...define the wall type and the railing wall type. I use "panels"...so, you will have to create a railing panel. I have also created a video on how to make a panel...it's on my YouTube Page. Let me know if I've missed something...or, if a guru has a tip or better method feel free to comment.
  10. Just a tip regarding ANNO Sets. If/when you create your own ANNO SET I would always make sure it's pointing to a specific LAYER SET. If you use a Chief OOB ANNO SET...you better make sure it is pointing to a specific LAYER SET also...some of the OOB ANNO SETS default to "Use Active Layer Set"....which means the last layer set you were using is still the "active" layer set. If I were you...I'd open one of Chiefs OOB templates...save it as your own template...give it any name you want...or something basic like "My Residential Plan Template"....then modify the defaults, then create the layer sets you know you use in every plan set, then create your ANNO Sets and point them to these specific layer sets. You can always export layer and anno sets from a plan you have been working on...and import them into your template plan. I just think it's a better method when you are just starting to wade into the wacky world of ANNO SETS. When you learn to use plan views...you will love them. The best thing about them really is that you can assign specific "REF SETS" to each PLAN VIEW. This is nice when you are sending views to layout and you want to shown things that are on a different floor level. Just my two cents...good luck. It's an adventure for sure.
  11. Larry - just about everything I know I learned from this fantastic Forum. Thank you for taking your time to put together some great videos also.
  12. JIm...quick video on how to make your gable bracket detail using polyline solids. Hope it helps..
  13. Yea...you are correct. I wasn't at my computer to try this before posting. But...just thought "Cad Detail from View" turned every item into a "line"...but, I guess not. Learn something new everyday with Chief...
  14. Why not create a “cad detail from view”...in the cad detail view draw a line in the center of the dimension...then “paste and hold position” in the plan view.
  15. +1 Here are a couple of screen shots that may help...
  16. Here is how I'd make the front porch...I would not use a roof unless it was absolutely necessary. I've attached the plan I used to if you want to look at how the rail wall was assembled....I forgot to go through that on the video. Newel-Gonzales.Karen - Porch-Rail Lesson.plan
  17. Newel - made a quick video for you regarding your views to layout and "Plan Views". I'm not sure this is exactly the trouble you were having...but it might help either way...
  18. I used a "railing wall"...style set to "open", set newel width to "0". Placed and edited doors in wall...doors are 36"x96". I used a P-Solid for the bench and just pulled it through the door. I did have to adjust the size of the bench to fit the muntins automatically placed in the doors...so, that may not work for you. I think there are many ways you can get the "look" without using symbols or a lot of P-solids...
  19. Thanks much. It's nice to be able to give back just a little.
  20. Newels in Chief...you can make your own or customize the deck rail many ways. Here's a quick video...hope it helps you out.
  21. Attached is a 10 min video showing how to make a face mounted deck rail supported by newels. This is something the guru's already know...but, maybe good for those just beginning to wade into symbols and creating moldings. I hope it's helpful.
  22. Yes...it's the Z-Plane adjustments that fixes everything. Thanks Chop for the symbol and helping with my journey to understanding. So simple...yet so confusing.
  23. Chop...I know how to make the symbol but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to stretch with the height of the railing wall. Here's a video that I hope explains my issue.
  24. Chop...made a video to help explain what happens when I make a railing symbol. It does not stretch to meet the height of the railing wall. Wondering what I am doing wrong...
  25. Chop... I've tried to recreate your "railing panel" in the attached...but, I'm not having any luck. How do you get the spindle to lock down below the deck and have only the top move when you change the height of the railing. Is the railing panel symbol created as "millwork"? I've moved the "Z" location like you did in your example...but, my entire railing panel moves up and down...the bottom is not locked as per your example. Thanks.
