  1. I'm trying to send a complex foundation 3D model to a client using 3D viewer, but the colours & generated Blue Sky backdrop is really annoying in the 3D viewer model.

When rotating the on-screen model the foundation is difficult to see the foundation drops and various footing heights and relationships this way.

How do I remove the backdrop from the 3D viewer model and can I share the 3D viewer model in black & white only/no colours?  thanks

  2. this started this morning on this plan only.  all elevations have the shadows offset when I sent the plot line to my layout page.  the shadows are perfect in the actual elevation, but get offset when sent to layout.  live view shows the elevation perfectly, but it's not the view I use for sending elevations to layout.  checked my other drawings and they are ok, no problems.

anyone have this issue and a solution?

    thanks

  3. Thanks Fellas

Sorry it took so long to get back here.  It's been super busy this past year and this new issue just wasn't helping.

I kept a copy of this house in X9 and will finish it there, but interested to see I'm not the only one that has this issue.

I usually make my trim out of solids or mouldings, but with a time crunch I decided to try the freize boards in X9 for this plan,

and it worked good.  Just disappointed it crapped out when I imported to X10.  Until this is resolved in a program update, I

will go back to my secure workarounds.

Love the all gable version BTW.

    And thank you all again.

  4. Yea, I see what your saying.

I don't add these details to my plan file, I keep them in a this separate plan file that I add to my file folder for each job.  I then add the reference the details to the layout file before printing.  My actual plan file runs fast and easy because its all Chief work no or very little CAD.

In this CAD plan I need to adjust and remove some details for every different job before I send them to final layout, I find it slow and tiresome.

  5. For work I need to use many details and notations that in autoCAD were kept on a separate plan and imported into the working drawing as needed.  However this has become a slow process to do in Chief and wanted to know if there is a workaround to this issue.  I have attached a sample of one of the CAD pages i created in Chief to see if others get the same slow reaction to zoom and pans.

Could this be a "purge" issue?  I used to purge my autoCAD files by writing purge in the task bar, but how is this done in Chief?

Not sure that this is it but you might try going to Preferences > General > and check your settings under "Save Dialog Size and Position".  I have mine checked for "Always" ... I think that was the Default out-of-the-box.

Ya...I think it must be some setting in preferences that got selected by mistake when I upgraded.  Doing more investigation tomorrow.

    Thanks for reminding me.

  7. might be a stupid question, but i have been noticing lately that all my drawing files are zoomed into a single letter or line in the drawing upon opening it for the first time of the day.  i have saved the drawing the previous day while zoomed out to full floor plan, but when opening the same plan the next day it will be zoomed in to a single spot/line/text letter.  not a big deal as i just zoom out to the full floor plan and start working ....just a little annoying is all.

    anybody have the same issue?

  8. Well, time for an update:

Thanks to everyone for all your help and advise, much appreciated.

Tried everything under the sun to get my laptop to Raytrace in X9 even loading

Windows 10 onto it, but to this day it just refuses to do it.

So, after almost five years of great laptop service I have given it it's retirement

papers and sent it to live in the kitchen where the wife can use it.

My new replacement has arrived and it's up and running super fast.  Did a speed test

thru Ookla on both systems, old and new, and the new rig is over 200% internet faster,  Raytraces

in X9 don't even break a sweat with this thing.  If I can get five years out of this new rig

I will be more than pleased.

Time for a new computer, just the cost of doing business, old technology just gets old and upgrading your computer will just go so far.

Edit , after seeing your spec's it should be ok.

Chief recommends on the dot com site that X9 would be best running 16GB ram (I have 12GB) and a video card with 4 to 8GB ( i have 3GB)

Been delaying the new computor purchase for a couple years now, but looks like X9 could be the straw that breaks.  Pricing out new rigs today.

You can also change your defaults so you get a standard, raytraceble view every time.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Just changed the general camera settings to these and tried the raytrace again.....still get same instant error message.

However, I am able to pull up the plan in standard 3D view with 70% ambient occlusion as you do.  Tried 100% but whole file crashes to black screen in any 3D.

    Vaughn & Michael,

The problems you are experiencing are not typical and are most likely related to your system, probably your video card.  X9 is using more advanced rendering technology then X8 did.  This makes the rendered views look better and much faster.

This is only just a guess.  I have no way of knowing anything based on your above posts.

The bottom line is that your problems are not going to get solved by posting here.

You need to contact technical support and they will work with you to help you solve your problems.

I submitted a case to tech on sunday and received a response to submit the plan in question to tech.  I submitted the plan file to tech at 6am tuesday morning.  Same time I shared to this forums users for other opinions.

  12. Update:

X9 is up and running in all 3D views, but will not raytrace anything.

Sent drawing file to tech to see if they can make a raytrace work and waiting to hear back.

Attached is the file I sent to Chief Tech.  It's extremely basic and should raytrace easily but don't on my system.

Anyone willing to try it on your X9?  I suspect now that my computor is missing some simple graphics code that

is preventing the video card from raytracing.  Next step is reverting back to earlier NVIDIA driver and see what happens.

    Crescent_Heights.zip

  13. Well, I called tech support this morning and thought my problems were solved.  Seems the global settings

in the NVIDIA control panel show no ambient occlusion is supported except by program.  Went to the X9

defaults and under Camera - General Camera settings the default ambient occlusion setting is 100%.

Reset this to zero and now the standard view 3D option will work without crashing the display.....sometimes.

The first two times I tried this today it worked great, but now it seems to be intermittent with different plans of

varying complexity.  Now all raytraces I tried today have failed with this error message:

    C:\p4sync\dev\Releases\19.1\chief\source\raytrace.cpp(495): Error #272032345

"An unexpected error occurred while ray tracing."

    2/27/2017 11:46:35 AM

    Build: 19.1.0.47x64

According to tech my Geforce card should be fine and well able to do all of Chiefs new features, so again WTH.

Called Tech again.........told to submit case file on web support page.

FYI...i have still not received a response from web support for the case file I submitted on the 25th.  Not holding

my breath till this is answered, so back to X8.

    Vaughn,

Can you provide the specs of your system?  How much memory?  How much GPU memory, etc.  I've been running X9 for several months on 3 different systems, including my ASUS G74SX Laptop.  I haven't experienced anything like what you're reporting.  You may need to contact Customer Support on Monday.

  15. Hey Chief

I recently downloaded the X9 full version to my my rig and can work in plan section and elevation views just fine as long as they are in "vector, glass house, or line view.  So yesterday I thought I would get a raytrace of the project I am working on.  To start a raytrace I need to be in "standard" view.  I pull up my project in 3D default "vector" view get the right angle then switch to "standard" view, but within seconds the black screen appears and I get the display driver has failed and recovered message.

I have tried everything I could find on the internet to solve this issue including:

1/ downloaded latest drivers for all video cards and programs (all up to date)

2/ tried changing screen refresh rate (didn't work)

3/ reinstalled X9 (same problem occurs)

4/ tried to copy and paste X8 raytrace file into X9 per other post (successful copy paste, but still display crashes)

Also another problem I find is X9 will not close using the shut down button.  After I close the program on screen, I pull up the task manager and there I see Chief X9 still running full speed.

The only way it fully closes is to end process in the task manager.  I even have found multiple chief X9 processes running simultaneously in the task manager 300k+ each.

I have been using chief since X3 and have never encountered these issues before.  WTH.  I am going back to X8 if this cant be fixed.

ps.  please return the 'toogle shadows" button to the task bar per X8
